As a gamer or computer user, you may know what monitor ghosting is. When the monitor’s response time becomes slow and the refresh rate is low, monitor ghosting happens. What is Monitor Ghosting?

Monitor ghosting is an image artifact that appears as ghosts or trail pixels behind the moving object on display. When lots of moving objects come, they are properly notified. So, most gamers face this ghosting problem if their monitor has a low response time and refresh rate.

But don’t be worried because it is not a permanent problem for your display like other effects. You may notice ghosting only during the fast movement of the objects. Also, you can fix it if your monitor has a good refresh rate (note, some games need a higher refresh rate like 144hz or 240hz)

What are the causes of monitor ghosting?

Mainly, monitor ghosting causes when the response time is slow. When the display refreshes images, the pixels cannot quickly update it and thus makes a smearing effect of the image on the monitor. You may know the LCD monitor has three types of panels: TN, IPS, and VA. Among them, ghosting appears mostly on VA panels because their response time is slower.

Some IPS monitor also show ghosting but to a smaller amount. It is not easy for some monitors to remove ghosting properly, but you can reduce most of the artifacts of ghosting by taking some tips. But if you have an expensive gaming monitor (TN, IPS, and VA panels), you may not face this problem.

If your PC monitor has a lower refresh rate, such as 65Hz or response time (more than 5ms), you can face this issue. Another issue is the backlight bleed. So, at last, we can say that when physical pixels cannot update fast like the image, you may see monitor ghosting. Besides, the faulty cable of the monitor can cause it. Moreover, in some cases, overclocking the monitor to higher refresh rates also cause issue similar to monitor ghosting.

How can you fix monitor ghosting?

You can fix monitor ghosting. There are some ways available. As we know that the main cause is incompatible response time and refresh rate. So, at first, try to correct this problem. I am going to show you most of them.

1. Check Frame Per Second Rate:

A monitor that is used for gaming will have a minimum 60Hz refresh rate. But if the rate is lower than it, you may face a ghosting problem. You have to check the refresh rate before buying any gaming monitor. But if you have a monitor with a higher refresh rate and still facing a ghosting problem, you need to change the refresh rate and make it higher.

Besides, it is important to check the response time before buying a monitor. If it is higher than 5ms, you may face a sweet spot. So, to solve the ghosting problem, take care of those issues.

2. Overdrive Function:

With the overdrive function, you can solve the problem of the monitor. Most of the monitors have this function. But you may find the different names of this function for various brands. For Acer, the term is overdrive; for BenQ, it is AMA; for LG, it is Response Time.

However, for most of the brands, the name is overdrive or known as response time. You have to turn the function on. Then alter this function until you get free from this ghosting on your monitor.

3. Setup Monitor Properly:

If you have a perfect gaming monitor with a good response time and refresh rate, but there is a ghosting problem, you should check your monitor’s setup. ULMB setting can produce ghosting. So, you have to disable this one to fix the problem.

Besides, you can also disable Nvidia G-sync, AMD free-sync, etc, to avoid monitor ghosting. Remember that these features are essential now, but for testing, you can disable them for some time. Take your time and review the monitor settings. You can also check the user manual and be sure that all the settings are correct.

4. Graphics Card Checking:

For gaming, you must need a graphics card. So, with an outdated driver for graphic cards, you may face ghosting. So, it is better to download the updated version regularly. You can also check the changelog of card driver update notes. Then fix the issue.

5. Visual Effects of Monitor:

Besides the overdrive functions, some other visual effects can cause ghosting on your screen. The effects are Perfect Clear, Motion Smoothing, Noise Reduction, Dynamic Contrast, etc. After checking these steps, you should also turn off those effects to solve the ghosting issue.
